my step-father now owns two, both were "gifts" from his parents. One, (manufactured circa 1980), I was allowed to use in grade ten to film some project, but everything had this funky green tint. The batteries lasted about 2 and a half minutes on full charge, so every shoot was a rushed one. This new one (manufactured circa 1990), I believe, is still deemed "too good" for me to use. Not that I break things, my step-dad's just a prick. btw - he's NEVER used either camera, they just sit and collect dust.

Will I want my son to remember his fourth birthday as a time when his father was hunched over, squinting through a black box at him? Would I like to catch a spontaneous food-fight amongst friends on film and be the only non-participant? No. I wouldn't use a video camera if I had a choice; I don't make a good spectator.
