What do you know about the West Nile Virus?

That mosquitoes get it from infected birds and that we get it from infected mosquitoes. And that I don't want it. It seem to really affect the elderly as they are the group that seem to be getting infected and dying from the disease.

I know where it comes from, how it gets around, how to protect your surroundings from it and that you DON'T want it!!!

I know enough not to be worried.

Just that it's carried by mosquitoes and doesn't affect pets. It can kill, but doesn't usually.

It is often innocuous but occasionally turns nasty, is carried by mosquitoes, and is slowly making its way westward.

Enough. I'm a microbiologist and I'm in Texas. I use to work at the Health Department and still have a lot of friends there.

Carried by mosquitos. Was found in isolated parts of US last year (mostly in dead birds). Now found in humans throughout the east coast. Number of human deaths (about 30) have been recorded. Elderly and those with compromized immune systems most at risk.  Several deaths have been attributed to patients who received transplants from donors who had the virus.

Never heard of it.

I know enough to be concerned. It has not yet "officially" turned up in my area, however, I have gone out and bought OFF bug spray and use it faithfully on my son and myself when we are out in the woods. This is something I had shunned in the past because I was never too keen on covering myself and my child in chemicals. I've also searched my yard and my camp for any standing water and gotten rid off any that I've found. You know...there's always something new to have to worry about! I hate this!

Recently discovered....now found nation wide...particularly dangerous for birds, the elderly and those of impaired immune systems....more proof that world shrinkage can be inconvenient...fatal....And segue into well entrenched information about discouraging mosquitoes from breeding....

All I know is that I don't want to get it! Not much else.

I think it's caused by mosquitoes (??).

It's killed about 20 people in the US so far and is carried by mosquitoes.

Alias Irrelevante

What I've picked up: it hasn't killed anybody yet, it's transmitted by mosquitos, and horses' eyes are especially susceptible because they're a good target for mosquitos.

absolutely nothing. never heard of it. has it been in US news recently, or something?

Alice, 21

Not much other than what I hear on the news: transmitted by mosquitos, flu-like symptoms, possibly fatal if you have a compromised immune system.

I know that it comes from Africa and is transmitted through mosquitos. Also, that they found some dead animals with the virus in them around here but it hasen't gotten anyone around this state yet.

Very little. Just that it's transferred by mosquitos and can be deadly in some cases (mostly the young and old).

That they have found dead crows in our area. It is transmitted by mosquitoes and now they are starting to think maybe through blood transfusions. It seems to affect the elderly and sick the worst.
