Yes. I live in a small rural community and the county fair is a big deal around here. I used to love going when I was a child, but now as an adult, I dread fair days! Now I take my son and just cringe everytime he gets on one of those rickety rides! I curse myself as we walk along "game row" and I have to listen to my son nag me for money to play one of those rip-offs (which I never
allow him to do...I don't know why he hasn't gotten this fact into his head already)! The food is greasy...the grounds are smelly, littered and usually muddy. However, for those of us who like to "people watch"...the fair is like a day at the zoo!

Not only have I been to a fair, but I usually work several evenings at my church's food booth at the fair. As a little girl, I went to the W.Va. State Fair in Lewisburg every summer. Since coming to this area in 1985, I'd say I've missed very few local fairs.

When I was a child, my family always made an excursion to the county fair. We did the livestock barns and the industrial exhibits Most years there was a machine that bent nails for take-apart puzzles. There were lots of other promotional freebies--yard sticks and fans and whistles and
suchlike, all plastered with names of the donor. Lunch was always at the Methodist
pavilion where the "food could be counted on":. Finally we hit the midway and all of the rides and gyp joints. The sideshow never lived up to the banners outside--but hope springs eternal.
