Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh my!

What is my favorite zoo animal? I love all animals, and they do not belong in a zoo. If someone feels that certain animals belong in a zoo, I tell you, I feel that this person should also be put in a zoo. And he should live amongst his own feces and wash him self in the small inadequate pool that he drinks from everyday.  And people will come by and laugh at him, and throw things at him, and frighten him all day. They will feed him things that make him sick, and they will feed him the wrong things. He will stay in that cage, or habitat for many many years, and slowly, he will start to loose his mind. Then he will pace back and forth in his area, and drool on himself. Being confined to this area will be totally unnatural, and he will die an early death.

I have a hard time answering this. I hate to go to zoos. On a rational level I know modern zoos play an important role in animal conservation and the animals are well treated. However, I get incredibly depressed just thinking about those wild animals confined the way they are.

I'm very partial to the American bears--brown, black and grizzly. Only recently have zoo keepers faced the problem of entertaining their captives, but for years and years, the bears have been amusing themselves, often training zoo visitors to participate. Further, bears amble through life with a ponderous dignity.

Since I don't know whether or not most consider turtles zoo animals, I'll just say elephants. Anytime I've seen an elephant...they're not just standing around. They entertain with their trunk or tail. I also love owls; they're just really cool birds.

I love the penguins. They have a really beautiful habitat for them at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. Something about their wobbly little walk brings a smile to my face. That and it is always cold in that building so its a nice place to hide out from the evil sun in the middle of the summer.

I've only been to the zoo twice in my life, and the only one I really remember was just a bus ride through a safari-type park at six flags. I remember the animals there seemed like they were braindead, since they were out of their natural environment. But I'll have to say I think the tigers were beautiful.

I hate to see animals locked up in a zoo, but I do think the tiger is so majestic in the way it slinks across the cage with its beautiful fur. And the giraffes are way too cool with their long necks and the fuzzy antennae on their heads.
