How do you feel about taking a sick day at work when you're really not sick?

I haven't ever done it, but I'm not that opposed to the idea--we don't really get big vacations these
days, and I think big vacations are really important because they give you time to recharge.

Well theres always a reason why I don't want to go to work like if I'm stressed out I don't need to be there because I'll end up screaming at everyone and it's probably better if i'm not there so I don't feel that bad

I usually don't do it but have done it a few times. It's not something I normally do. Some days you just need some time off. Of course, I still don't have a job, so I've had LOTS of sick days lately!

I don't do it very often, but (for example) my cat was acting funny the other day and if he had looked like he was going to die on me, or get really sick, I would've called in sick.

Ashley, 20

Even when I am sick I never call off of work. However, if it was something important, I would do it.

Melissa, 20

My supervisor and job are so flexible that I can take time whenever I need it. It's just not an issue for me.

Laura, 37

I usually have no problem with it! They're really my days to use so why should it matter when and why I use them. Don't give them out if you don't want them to be used!

Tracy, 24

I have no problem with that at all... except now, in my older years when I could really use a REAL sick day, I don't get any where I work!! Not paid anyway! Sucks.

Fisch, 47
Preston, CT USA

That depends on what the reasoning is. Sometimes folks need breathing room for the sake of keeping sanity. Other times, there is a special event that work isn't willing to make room for. These are good enough reasons so long as they aren't too common.

Firelady, 24
Frisco, TX USA

I freelance so I don't get any paid days. No work - no pay.

It isn't honest. Fortunately for me, I don't need to. I've been at my job long enough that I get three
weeks of vacation. I also have three personal days that I can take as long as I give my boss a day or two's notice. He also lets me come in late after early doctor or service person appointments as long as I let him know ahead of time and make up the hours that I missed.

Cathie, 53

As I'm a contract programmer and don't get paid for sick days, or other days off, I take them when I need them, whatever the reason.

Jane, 63
West Linn, OR USA

Absolutely fine.

Keri-Jade, 23

No. In fact, I have the opposite problem. I find it hard to take sick days when I am actually sick.

Felicia, 36
Lowell, MA USA

If there is an officially blurred distinction between "sick days" and "personal days" I see nothing wrong with taking a "sick" day for "personal" business. Of course, this habit is open to abuse.

Jill, 61
Saylorsburg, PA USA

As long as it doesn't affect my pay or doesn't get me fired or in trouble, I say go for it.

Stephanie, 25
TX USA

I've never done that. Its slightly dishonest. I dont care too much if other people do that, tho.

Talia, 25
Tallahassee, FL USA

I haven't done it in years because now I'm REALLY sick, but when I did, I felt guilty.

Reba, 57
Gaithersburg, MD USA

I've done it before, but I'm always so guilt ridden during the day I call in sick, that I really don't enjoy myself. So, I guess what it comes down to is: Use sick days for when you really are sick!

Tam

Guilty.

Cindy, 41
VA USA

I feel bad for lying and I'm afraid that I'm going to get in trouble

I think it's useful to do it sometimes when you have unplanned family responsibilities that come up. For example, if you need to stay home with a sick child. I know in this economy, when I could get laid off work at any time, I'm less likely to sacrifice my family just so I can go to work
another day. My family are the only people I can count on, I'm not going to put work ahead of them. The other time I would take a sick day without being ill is if I was really stressed out and needed a day to adjust my attitude so I could cope. It serves the same purpose as staying
home when ill in order to get well sooner and keep your co-workers healthy.

I think if you're sick of the work environment you're sick. A day off can do a lot for you sometimes.

Alias Irrelevante

I think sick days are really personal days. I really don't get sick that often, so my sick days are personal days in my mind.
