Is
the movie ever better than the book? I am an avid reader and only in rare cases did I like the
movie better than the book... The movie "The Shawshank Redemption", I thought,
was better than the story it was based on, "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank
Redemption", but that is one of the very very few.

Not in my experience.

I have found that to be true in a few cases,
but I prefer to read the book first...and I tend to get more out of a book than a movie.
One example I could offer was Jaws. I had read the book long before the movie came out.
When I finally did see it, I was a little disappointed with the ending...though the
graphics throughout were just about what I had imagined in my head.

They eat a lot of strange things on that
show, can't say I'm up for it.

No.

I'm not much of a movie-goer--I usually
prefer my mental production of a novel to all other versions.

Yes, when
the movie comes out first.

The only time that I thought the movie was
better was Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. It was too hard to keep the 8 different voices
separate. The mothers were OK, but I couldn't tell the difference between the daughters.

I think that depends on the person. To me, I
doubt it. To some people who have a hard time filling up the empty space in a book with
pictures in their head prefer the movies. I read slowly, partially because I invest so
much imagination into 'being in the book'.

I have yet to see a movie that was better
than the book.

Many of Stephen King's stories end up being
made into better movies than the book (I.e., Stand by Me, Shawshank Redemptions, The
Shining, Carrie) - then again many are not. Also, the A&E adaptation of "Pride
and Predjudice" I thought was more compelling than the book itself.

Once in a great while. Usually when the book
follows the movie--novelizations tend to lack the life that comes to a work with
originality.

No. Nothing is more powerful than
the imagination.

Not in my experience. However cleverly
adapted, time constraints usually lead to cutting out at least one subplot, which weakens
the movie.

I've yet to see it happen.

I don't think I've ever seen a movie that
was better than it's book. Books can just do so much more and Hollywood has yet to match
the imagination.

Sometimes. It all depends. If they get the
movie just the way I saw it when I read it, then yes.

The Outsiders and Interview With a
Vampire are as good and better than the books.

Sometimes the movie is better than the book,
but only if you haven't read the book first.

Yes, when
you watch the movie previous to reading the book. I did that with The Scarlet Letter,
Riding in Cars with Boys and then I did it with Wonderboys (although the book of
Wonderboys is also excellent).
