Would you rather be a serf here and now or a noble 500 years ago?

I'd rather be a serf now with flush toilets than a noble 500 years ago with chamber pots.

When I first read this question I thought "This is easy. I'd rather have been a noble 500 years ago." But when I stopped to think about it, I realized that at that time there was no way to escape what you were but now, you can better your situation. (by getting a basketball scholarship for instance.)

Unfortunately, I have to opt for an ignoble career in the unglamorous present. My life has been saved to often by modern medicine for me to retreat to the past.

Neither option seems particularly appealing. Have the conveniences of modern life, but be indebted to some weathly family or have control over my destiny and others but live in a time that is physically difficult. I guess the life of a serf in modern times is probably still easier than that of a noble 500 years ago.

A serf here and now...it's what I'm more accustomed to!!

I'll take modern plumbing and medicine, thank you. Life is much better for most people today.

I'd take serf here and now because they have a chance to work their way up. Nobles back then didn't even have electricity or aspirin.

Let me put it this way...I would rather be anyplace but here...I am not noble, so I cannot qualify as a noble...I would probably say the closest thing would be a plebian in ancient Rome...Of course, I would prefer to hang and bang in ancient Greece, or Ancient Egypt...

I'm assuming that serfdom now merely means being pretty poor, which isn't such a bad thing. But I've been really poor long enough, and while being a noble 500 years ago might mean fewer baths, I'm definitely up for some wealth.
