When was the last time you changed a major belief?

This last spring when a huge drama at work made me rethink what really motivates peple.

1980, but I can't talk about it.

I think a major belief would have to be held by more people than just myself--and I don't think I've ever changed a belief for multiple people at once. I also don't know when the last time I changed my own stance on an important topic was.

When I studied the bible almost thirty years ago. I always believed in God, but that changed some of my previously held ideas.

Well, I grew up being forced to go to a very strict, God-fearing Baptist church. I absolutely hated it and got nothing out of religion except the fear that God was going to "strike me dead" for my various childhood sins, as I'd heard the preacher tell me time and time again. I grew into an
adult fearing, almost "distrusting" God, and basically wanting nothing to do with the religious community. A while ago, however, I started attending services at a "non-Baptist" church, and slowly, through this minister and some wonderful people I have changed my view of God, and religion as a whole. I am now starting to view God as my loving Father, not some vengeful, punishing deity.

When I was a kid, I was positive that I would never get married. He would have to be Catholic and
Chinese, and outside of my brothers, I only knew of one Catholic Chinese boy. He was two years younger than me, and a little nerd. I figured my little sister could have him, if she even wanted him. Then I fell in love with a Polish Catholic boy, and that blew that major belief to smithereens.

A major belief.... hmm.... I don't know. Maybe 15 years ago when I change my viewpoint on the pro-life/pro-choice debate.

Laura, 37
Lowell, MA USA

I was going to join the Socialist Workers (socialist political party) a few years ago. I was told by numerous reliable sources how badly run it is, so I opted not to. I've had next to nothing to do with them since.

Last year after my girlfriend lost her mom. I still don't believe that marriage equals commitment, mainly because the word has gotten shallow due to over-use, but she felt like she didn't have any family anymore. I just wanted to take care of that. We're engaged for March 3rd of next year because 3/3/3 is easy for me to remember.

At the moment I'm rethinking capital punishment.

I really can't recall.... I'd have to say when I was about 20; it involved organized religion.

I have changed my view on abortion. I used to think it was OK. But when you have children of your own and realize what a gift and miracle they are, I realized an abortion is killing a life.

Janet, 45

My faith in Christ.
