If a friend of yours did the exact same job you did making twice the money, would it bother you?

I'm sure it would if I were younger. At the moment, all I care about is my retirement.

Only if they actively tried to prevent me from attaining the same.

Yes, and I would probably leave my company to work at his/her company, if they would hire me.

Melodi, 19

Probably, but not enough to affect the friendship. I might start looking for a different employer.

I wouldn't mind. Money doesn't usually enter into it for me. How hard someone works does. I am irked by people how are lazy and don't but their full potential into the whole thing.

Being that I am a teacher, yes, it would bother me if a friend was making TWICE as much money. Actually, I know very few teachers who will ever make twice as much as I make now and let me tell you...it's not that much! Now if the friend was making a little more, then I might check into why and whether I want to leave my current job if I'm happy. The place and people you work with is 90% of the job so I wouldn't leave just for the money if I was happy at what I was doing. But if things were bad, I might just move on to a place that paid more and had a better atmosphere!

Honestly, it probably would bother me. However, I would try not to think about it and just be happy for my friend.

Yes.

If both the job and the context (small firm vs. large firm, rural community vs. big city) were the same, then I'd apply to where my friend worked.

If we had the same amount of years in the company, the same title in the company, and the same amount of hours worked. Inside work it would bother me. When my shift is over I will still ask him to have a beer with me. You could change the word friend to woman, mortal enemy, white
man, or black man. The reality is I am still being screwed by the company, not by my "friend". If I am being screwed by my friend guess who is not my friend anymore.

Christopher, 28

It depends. If this friend lived in a large city.. he/she probably would make twice what I make doing the same job. In this case, it wouldn't upset me at all. If we lived in the same area perhaps.

Hell yes.

yep

It would only bother me that I didn't get THAT job instead... I wouldn't begrudge my friend because of it.

Doug2, 29

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! THAT IS NOT FAIR. OR JUST.

Christine, 37
Syracuse, NY USA

Yes.

Laura, 37
Lowell, MA USA

No, not really. But I would be suspicious that I was making so much less and I'd look for another place thats hiring for the exact same thing.

Em, 16

Depends, I guess. I really, really doubt that would happen. . .but it depends on the friend and whether (s)he was trained for this job. My degree doesn't really have anything to do with most of my job, so if somebody had a degree that pertained more to this kind of work I'd think it was only fair for them to make more. Of course, how well the person does the job is an important consideration too. If someone happened to be twice as deserving as I, I wouldn't have a problem with him/her making twice as much. But if (s)he was exactly as deserving, I'd be annoyed if (s)he made more.

If other things like hours, distance from home, and quality of co-workers were compatable, heck yea I'd be bothered, and looking to transfer.

Ryan, 29

What about educational level? What about job seniority? Too many facts are missing for me to give an opinion.

Jill, 61
Saylorsburg, PA USA

Sure would.

I know who asked this question, and I know why they asked this question. Of course, the bottom line is it would totally irritate me, like finger nails on a chalkboard, if I knew somebody was making twice the money I was making for the same job...bottom line, do NOT tell me how much money you are making...I do not want to know...no good can come of telling somebody how much money you make...and it is really nobody's business anyhow...
