Is
guilt bad?Guilt causes a lot of people to do the right things for the wrong
reasons. Is that good? bad? I read once that if you keep doing the right thing for
whatever reason, pretty soon it will become a habit and you will WANT to do it. Isn't that
how toilet-training works? Parents make the child feel guilty because he wets his diaper
and eventually...voila...he "learns" to use the toilet. That has always
seemed kind of cruel to me but hey, at least it works.

I don't think so...guilt probably keeps a
lot of undesirable behavior in check...however, to "guilt" someone into doing
something, well, that's bad.
Tam
I don't think so. It can keep you in-line
morally. Some of it is. When it becomes something you obsess over. Gotta learn to let some
of it go.

Having grown up in a most Catholic
household, I am a self-professed expert on guilt. I think remorse over a wrong-doing,
legal or moral, is a part of good nature and largely what separates us from animals. I
don't think a steady diet of guilt for every tiny little thing one does that may not be
socially accepted does a person any damned good at all.

It feels bad.

Nope. If there were no guilt, there would be
no reason to NOT do things that were wrong or deceptive.

No, but it can be. I think sometimes guilt
is what helps us keep in line, although there are also some of us who are anxious because
of guilt.

Guilt is the most horrible gut
wrenching experience you can ever face!! If you have a conscience. It makes your stomach
swim in circles, and your mind race! It makes you
sweat, and you cannot seam to consintrate. It may not be bad for others, but it's bad for
yourself.

No, Guilt is your conscious keeping you on
track.

Not if it helps you change your behavior.

No, it just means you did something you
really weren't supposed to do.

Undeserved and irrational guilt can harm a
child and warp the personality of that child as an adult. Conversely, a child who never is
exposed to the feeling of guilt will grow up amoral and exploiting.

Depends. Feeling guilty for things
that you SHOULD feel guilt for is good; feeling guilt for things that you shouldnt is bad.

I don't think it is bad or good. It just is.

Excessive guilt yes...if you do something
wrong, you should feel guilty about it...of course, I feel guilty about
everything...including the fact that if I do not have anything to feel guilty about, well,
I feel guilty about that...

In some cases, if it's
being used for personal gain, revenge, etc... or for
things that you shouldn't have to be guilty about. [This is where religion comes into
question, but I'm not gonna touch that one. =)] I think guilt is part of what makes one a
humane, decent person. It means that you have a sense of right and wrong, I suppose.

No.

Guilt is good if it makes you atone for a
wrong and if it keeps you from repeating bad behavior. Guilt is bad if it takes over your
life and makes it impossible for you to function.
Jane, 62

Yes, guilt is good. It keeps us from
repeating past errors and doing things we know to be wrong. Misplaced guilt isn't so good.
If you're feeling guilty about something, you need to stop and think about whether your
guilty feeling is legitimate.

No, how else would we know what is right and
what is wrong. I still carry guilt from when I was a teenager and did some things that I
shouldn't. It makes us remember what we should do and not do.

Guilt is a good think it makes us realize we
are not always right. Sometimes guilt is a bad thing when it attaches itself like a
leach, sucking all of the ambition out of you. Turning you into a desperate evil S.O.B.
Knowledge is better then you can debate that you are not guilty, or look for the remedy to
the problem you are guilty about.

yes
most definitely - i have been hiding a very big secret for over two years now and still
know one knows the truth. im feeling very bad about it. (p.s dont worry it's not a
criminal offence)

Guilt is
very, very bad. One does not need it to make decisions; one must only have to consider the
consequences of an action. Guilt haunts you, deprives you of health and happiness, and
ruins personal relationships.
