Do you ever find yourself interrupting or finishing the sentences of others during a conversation?

Yes I have found myself interrupting or finishing sentences for others. I really don't mean to it just happens.

I probably do, but I try not to. I think it's rude to interrupt. Of course, it's also rude to monopolize a conversation.

Judy, 62

Not too often. It's one of my pet peeves so I try really hard to check myself if I get tempted!

Fisch, 47
Preston, CT USA

Not so much these days, but when I first moved away from New York City, where the pace of conversation is very fast, I would think that someone's brief pause meant they were finished and I would jump in.

Jane, 63
West Linn, OR USA

Sometimes. Not a whole lot.

Karen, 23

My husband's mind is failing and I frequently have to help him identify the word he wants to use.

Jill, 61

No. But that is an occupational habit. As a journalist, it is very important to listen and give people the chance to say what they are thinking instead of tromping all over their words. Also, being a
Southerner, I was taught that it is very disrespectful to interrupt people and I hate to be interrupted. But being a Southerner, I would never tell anyone that that he or she was being rude. (or is that passive aggressive? six of one....)

Cindy, 41

Way too often, but in my defense at least half the time it's because people have trouble getting to their point.

Alias Irrelevante

No. I was taught that it isn't polite to interrupt.

Cathie, 53

I've noticed lately that I have started doing this. It irks me when others do it to me, so I am trying to quelch it in myself.

Felicia, 37

now and then.

Ryan, 29
Morton, IL USA

Sometimes, but I stop and think "That's rude".

Stephanie, 27
TX USA

Yes, all the time - I'm FAR too impatient!

No. I hate it when people do that to me so I'm always careful to let other people finish their sentences before saying anything.

Aly, 17
Cardiff UK

very rarely... usually it only happens when I'm in a serious conversation with someone and we're arguing about it... other than that, no, I usually try to refrain from interrupting.

Doug2, 30
Kansas City, KS USA

I don't finish sentences. I worked very hard to listen better and to interrupt less. I think I'm reasonably successful.

Laura, 38
Lowell, MA USA

I never finish the sentences of others but I do find myself interrupting. This is a habit I am trying to tame. And I will, too. I've read that the main thing you can do is to be aware that you are
doing it and make a concious effort to stop. After awhile, THAT becomes a habit.

Reba, 57
Gaithersburg, MD USA

Yes, sometimes I do. I need to work on that!

Tam

All the time. It's an annoying family trait that drives my husband
crazy. So
I am trying to work on it.

3/27/03 I don't finish sentences, but I know I interrupt sometimes. I get so
eager to share that I just blurt it out. I need to try harder to control
that!
